As the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping people affected by Rb, we provide support and information to families and individuals, fund research into the prevention and treatment of retinoblastoma, raise awareness among health professionals and the public and influence policy to improve services.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Thursday 25th November 2021, my grandson (AJ) was taken to the GP as his eye had gone cloudy. Thinking it would just be an antibiotics job, his mummy and daddy were shocked and worried when they were sent to hospital for more tests and then referred to Manchester Eye Hospital for more tests a day later. Hours passed on the Friday and eventually, they were told that AJ had a growth in the back of his eye which was also known as Retinoblastoma. "Don't Google it!" they were told. After googling it, they then discovered why...

Retinoblastoma is an extremely rare form of eye cancer, normally found in children under 5. The size of the tumour determines the treatment that the child requires. AJ needed to go under a general anaesthetic for his examination by a specialist RB team in Birmingham and unfortunately, it was found that the tumour was too big for treatment and enucleation of the right eye (removal) was the best way forward for our little soldier.

Fast forward almost 2 weeks and AJ had his right eye fully removed, on 9.12.21 (just one day after his first birthday), and was recovering well but then, due to an infection, his body rejected his implant and he had to have a fat graft to fill the socket space in April 2022. The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust have been a massive support to AJ's mummy and daddy throughout their whirlwind journey and to say thankyou, I would like to raise some money, in honour of my inspirational grandson, to help support other families affected by RB.

On 16th July, I will be climbing Ben Nevis and because I fancy a challenge, I'll be doing the full route rather than the tourist route! Please donate what you can for this brilliant chatity - and wish me luck! 🤞
