Berlin Marathon 2011 · 25 September 2011 ·

The death rate of new mothers decreased by 70% in the first hospital where we delivered multi-disciplinary team-training on clinical management of maternity emergencies. We use small-group teaching in skills-stations and scenarios, to improve knowledge and team-work, and teach all maternity staff.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. We are a team running the Berlin marathon 25th September 2011 to contribute towards efforts to reduce preventable deaths in Malawi: in pregnancy and childbirth, in childhood, under anaesthesia, in intensive care, and due to trauma.

Up to  80% of the 1 in 36 (compared to 1 in 9,000 in the UK) young women who die during pregnancy or childbirth in Malawi die due to substandard care, often because of lack of essential equipment or drugs. Part of the solution is education and team training, which is what Scotland Malawi Anaesthesia (www.smap.org.uk) is all about. Annual training courses are delivered in partnership with our Malawian Colleagues, to  support Anaesthetic Clinical Officers in the care of women in childbirth, children and sick and injured in Malawi.
