Story

Move. Create. Compete. is Grant Thornton UK's campaign running from April to June to raise £10,000 for NHS Charities Together which supports NHS staff and volunteers caring for coronavirus patients.

This runs alongside the 2.6 Challenge, a national fundraising campaign to save the UK’s charities. Each time you donate to NHS Charities Together, the government will match it.

As each day passes, frontline NHS workers are exposed to a level of trauma comparable to that experienced by emergency workers during 9/11. Coping with patients lost to the virus, colleagues falling ill, elevated stress levels and constant risk of exposure to coronavirus makes their bravery even more remarkable during these uncertain times. Yet it all takes a toll on their mental health. Workers will need both support and recuperation once the pandemic concludes.

Perry Burton, Head of People and Culture at Grant Thornton UK LLP, said: "We are a firm that cares about people and we want to support the NHS, which works tirelessly to safeguard our nation’s health and wellbeing. Yet courageous NHS workers and volunteers need our help now and when this crisis is over. Move. Create. Compete. is about bringing our people together and giving back to a cause bigger than ourselves by raising vital funds for those looking after us."

About NHS Charities Together

NHS Charities Together is a membership organisation representing, supporting and championing NHS Charities. 143 of the UK’s NHS charities are members.

NHS Charities Together has launched a national appeal to support NHS staff and volunteers caring for COVID-19 patients. Since launching on Monday 22 March, the appeal has raised over £15m of its £100m target. Funds will be distributed to NHS trusts across the UK and will be spent in three ways:

Regular grants to NHS Charities Together members

Emergency grants to member NHS charities through weekly, small grants that members can spend quickly on enhancing the wellbeing of NHS Staff and volunteers caring for COVID-19 patients, such as:

* funding wellbeing packs/gifts for staff and volunteers on wards/departments (e.g. food deliveries, wash kits, overnight stay kits, furniture for rest rooms, etc.

* cost of travel, accommodation for NHS staff and volunteers

* volunteer expenses

* other items as requested by members that enhance the wellbeing of NHS staff and volunteers caring for COVID-19 patients.

Post pandemic grants to NHS charity members

Some of the funds will be spent on supporting the mental health and recovery of NHS staff and volunteers once the crisis is over. This will be in the form of grants that provide respite, rehabilitation and mental health recovery of NHS staff and their families.

Plus there will be consideration of larger projects in consultation with the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England.
