Story
On the 26th May this year I set off from Land's End to cycle to John O'Groats in Scotland, over 9 days. My chosen route covered just over 897 miles. I completed it alone and unsupported (in the physical sense), staying at hostels and B&Bs along the way.
Why am I doing this? (Good question!)
I have always wanted to do this as a personal challenge, but I also want to raise money for a local charity. I have chosen Trinity Hospice and Brian House Children's Hospice in Blackpool, not only because it is local, but also because, in September last year, Charlie Stansfield, aged 6, a brave little boy who attended the same school as Oliver and Samuel, lost his battle with Neuroblastoma. This is a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer that affects about 100 children per year in the UK. Charlie was diagnosed when he was just a year old but, after many treatments, was in remission; however in May 2011, his family were told that the illness had returned. The support that the whole family received from Brian House was fantastic, and without organisations like this, such an already difficult time would be so much harder. Brian House is part of Trinity Hospice and Palliative Care Services; they receive about one third of their £6 million annual running costs from local NHS Primary Care Trusts, and the rest is raised through the local community (which is where we come in!).
Charlie overcame many obstacles in his short life, and if by me undertaking this challenge, and hopefully overcoming the physical demands of completing it - along with the complexity of organising it - I am able to raise much needed funds for Brian House to continue their fantastic work, then I feel I will have played a small part in helping them to help other families in the future.
