Great African Divide Ride

Great African Divide Ride · 23 September 2022
“Great African Divide Ride”. No-one has ever ridden this route, or documented this journey, so it’s not just epic, but a real first! This year we will ride the first 3000kms.starting from Victoria Falls on 26th September 2022. Charles Betts dreamed up this route, unfortunately Charles and Peter du Plessis for health reasons are unable ton join us.
Al Watermeyer and Patrick Millar will attempt to ride the full distance. Paul Taylor will ride with us to Johannesburg where Patch (Helen Patchford) will replace him for the rest of the journey.
A big thank you to Diana Wall and Chris Himonides will provide support driving the vehicle setting up camp and all the chores that go with that. They will also ride where able.
The African continent is wedged between two great oceans, the Indian Ocean in the east and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The Great African Divide runs along the watershed that separates the river basins of the rivers flowing eastwards into the Indian Ocean from the basins of the rivers flowing westwards into the Atlantic Ocean.
The route is as close as possible to the Great African Divide, following the Southern African watersheds. The start is at Victoria Falls. In prehistoric times (about 200 million years ago), the current position of the Falls was on the African Divide. We will travel a large part of the length of Botswana into South Africa the and finish in the town of Rhodes.
This is truly EPIC with some magnificent mountains. We will be climbing the highest point in South Africa - The Sentinel.
