Seafarer's UK Great Island Challenge · 26 September 2009
The Cause
Seafarers UK aims to unite the maritime charity sector to address the specific needs of seafarers and their families. Seafarers UK is able to use its experience of working with the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and fishing fleets to raise money and distribute it where it is needed. As an umbrella Seafarers UK can lead the sector in maximising the effectiveness of its fundraising activities. Over the last ten years Seafarers UK has granted £28 million and our work continues with particular emphasis on:
ensuring they can live a dignified and poverty-free life, with access to health care and domestic assistance. Dependents & Families – helping them to maintain a reasonable quality of life including accommodation, clothing and education.
ensuring they have access to reasonable shore facilities including transport and communication with their families.
providing financial assistance to those from underprivileged backgrounds who wish to train for a seagoing career e.g. Sea Cadets
In addition to the above, our long term aim is to maximise efficiency and promote best practice across the sector as a whole.
The Challenge........
To sail around the Isle of Wight and then to cycle around its 62 miles of coastline all in the space of 48 hours
The Challengers!
To take on this mighty challenge 12 individuals have gathered together. We will form two groups of 6 to crew two yachts and sail around the island and then cycle 62 miles to get around the coastline.
There is some sailing and cycling experience amongst the team but no one has ever sailed or cycled the distances involved or done both back to back in this way!
Over the coming months we will be training hard to achieve the level of fitness needed to complete the challenge and campaigning to raise funds to support the good work done by Seafarers UK.
This page will be updated to keep track of the training and activities done to date to help raise money for the cause!
