SMIRA is a UK-based Registered Charity supporting families and health & education professionals involved in the upbringing of selectively mute children. Selective Mutism is an anxiety based condition whereby those affected, usually children, will be able to speak fluently in some situations but find themselves unable to do so in situations where they feel ill at ease. Families can feel very isolated and distressed and SMIRA was set up in 1992 to offer them support. The condition can affect at least 1 in 150 children but is still little known. SMIRA works hard to raise awareness of the condition and to provide information where needed. The charity is well respected both in the UK and internationally.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm donating my birthday to SMIRA,  a UK based Charity that supports families involved in the upbringing of selectively mute children.

As many of you know one of my children is a selective mute, and although she can speak well to direct family; is unable to speak to others, and can feel very distressed and isolated.

This feeds her depression as she faces an uncertain future.
