GRWE's Christmas Care Appeal 2014 · 3 October 2014

Forever Hounds Trust is the UK's largest independent charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and homing of abused, abandoned and unwanted greyhounds and lurchers. Forever Hounds Trust operates nationally and homes around 350 of these special dogs every year.

Story

We really need your help.  Our work never stops, not even at Christmas.  We rescue and provide essential shelter and care to greyhounds and lurchers who do not have a home or a family to call their own. Hounds who would otherwise face a very uncertain future – on death row in local pounds, in cold and draughty sheds or living rough.

Please help us ensure safe kennel spaces 365 days a year. This is by far our biggest expense and it costs us on average £8 per day to provide shelter to a dog in desperate need.

A lurcher girl was found lying in the road suffering from exhaustion, malnutrition and severe mange. It was clear that she had recently had pups, but sadly there was no sign of them.  She was taken to the pound but nobody came for her.  Just as her time was up GRWE stepped in.  We named her Grace and her road to recovery began.

A couple of weeks later we got another call from the pound: two pups had been found dumped in separate dustbins, thrown away like rubbish.  There was no doubt, they were Grace’s pups!   Two little girls, malnourished and riddled with mange just like their mum.  We named them Poppy and Floss.

Once in our care they soon recovered and blossomed into beautiful young dogs. Their fur grew thick and their legs long – the very picture of a shaggy lurcher.  Grace’s recovery took a little longer but she responded well to medical and psychological care and we matched her to a wonderful forever home.  She even enjoyed a family holiday in France this summer!

Our kennels are often the first time the greyhounds and lurchers we rescue experience safety, warmth and kindness.  For the many hundreds of abandoned hounds we care for during the year every day must feel like Christmas.

Some dogs are lucky and only stay for a short while before going to their new home but others need to stay longer.  We are of course glad to be able to provide this safe space while they adjust and recover from their past.  We never rehome a dog until he or she is ready.  For these dogs time is indeed money, with a four-month stay in kennels costing around £960.

With a soft bed, nutritious food, toys and secure outdoor runs our kennel spaces provide not just a refuge for hounds in desperate need but also a place where they can go through their initial healing process in peace and at their own pace.

A gift of £20 this Christmas, or whatever you can afford, will make a real difference and help provide the safe haven our hounds need.

What better gift to give this Christmas than a safe and warm place for dogs like Grace, Poppy and Floss to rest their head.

With our heartfelt thanks for your support, and wishing you a joyful Christmas.
