Story

If you're here from the mixing bowl, or have listened in to a previous Ginger (insert weekend day name here) event, then you know the deal by now! For all newcomers, here is the lowdown:

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 13 months. It took a lot of effort for us to get a correct diagnosis and the medical intervention she needed, despite showing textbook symptoms. It was a scary time for me and my wife.

We have now got to grips with our situation, and Róisín is living a healthy life with the initial help of multiple daily injections of insulin, and more recently through an insulin pump that she has to wear 24 hours a day. She is a happy girl, blossoming at school and enjoying life. She'd probably rather not have the pump, though. That's the background to why I started on my annual mission.

One of my hobbies, in what spare time I have, is DJing. I broadcast occasionally on The Mixing Bowl Radio over the internet, to a small group of dance and electronic music enthusiasts and general nutters. I wanted to do something to help to find a better treatment or cure for  type 1 diabetes, so in 2011 I decided to stretch my hobby of DJing to an extreme, and did it to raise funds for JDRF. I wanted to break the site's record for longest broadcast (at the time 12 hours), and I went on for 17 in the end. I raised over £1300.

In 2012 I decided to push further by going for 24 hours solid, armed only with a laptop, an ironing board, a midi controller and a few cans of red bull. Again I raised over £1300 for JDRF, and I decided that this really should be something I do every year.

So, I'm doing it again this year, from 8am on 10 August to 8am on 11   August. It'll be a hard slog from my end, but it will be 24 hours of what I consider to be among the best music I know. Broadly speaking the music will be anything that has a bit of feeling to it, whether that feeling be chilling in the morning, gently being brought into the day ahead, grinding your hips to funky tunes around a barbeque in the afternoon or grinning like a loon and banging your fist in the air at 3am. Generally a certain funk infuses most of what I love and play, but things can get wonky in the very early hours. Previous virtual attendees will confirm that whatever it be, it'll be a journey.

I won't be doing shout outs or chatting over tracks, so if you want to chat to me or other listeners on the day, go to http://radio.tmb.dj/chat.html or if you have an irc client go to quakenet and join #themixingbowl room. It's normally a good laugh in there, but beware the rad.
