Story
The cycling event on 11th April 2021 is a way to bring friends of Gunjur Project together for an activity we can all do no matter where in the world we are. We aim for everyone to cycle as far as they can (hopefully at least 50km!) and between us cover the distance of the river Gambia (river Gambie 1120km)
We hope to also hope to raise some funds for the charities covid appeal in order to provide food security to identified families.
Since Covid came to Gambia in March last year we have seen
relatively low numbers of confirmed covid infections and deaths. To date 161 have died with a positive test of covid. The picture here is very different to what has happened in Europe. However the impact of covid has been massively felt in Gambia. Many people have lost their jobs with a complete collapse of tourism. Tourism is one of the most important sectors for Gambia as it contributes 25% of the country's total gross domestic product (GDP) Hotel and lodge workers, taxi drivers, fruit sellers, market holders, wood carvers, drummers, singers drink sellers – all have lost their income. There is no furlough in Gambia, there is no job seekers allowance, no financial support
– nothing. On top of this food prices have really started to increase – rice, oil, sugar, jumbo, fish, chicken all have increased prices. Gambia is one of the poorest countries in the world and things are becoming even harder. It’s a worrying time.
