Harjit Singh Dosanjh and I, Gurkaran Singh Bains are truly fu@ked...!!!! We’ve only just gone and applied to run the 26 MILE - LONDON MARATHON 2014 ….and got a guaranteed place, call it a blessing or a fast track ticket to our graves.
This time last year we were naturally creating more curves on our bodies than the Michelin Man (well, at least I was…). I remember mid-September 2013 Harjit and I went to the Gym with ‘Squat Master Jag’ and we could barely run more than 14 minutes, I sputtered out the most ridiculous thing to Harjit “let’s do the London Marathon….”, to which the idiot replied “….yeh, go on then…it’ll be a laugh..!!!!”.
Since September surprisingly we stuck to our words, we started to train with guidance and plan from the Asian version of Forest Gump (Ket Patel), got the trainers, t-shirts and gay looking leggings that would fit my 7 year old daughter (which raises eyebrows of passers-by when running in the cold..!!). Harjit and I are now training exhaustingly up to 6 days per week, this being our biggest challenge physicologically and physically. It involves 06:30 Sunday morning long runs, running through rain, snow and blizzard conditions, running during lunch with Annette (… bitch slapping me if I don’t keep up), injuries to our knees, muscles and tendons, the pains are endless. We’ve lost tremendous weight and started to maintain a good level of stamina, over the last 2 months we’ve successfully completed 2 half Marathons in Birmingham and Staffordshire …and …we …were …fu@ked.!!! There’s no other word to explain our physical conditions at the end of the race, the tears of excitement and ‘pain’ showed us that we have tremendous amount of work to do before the main London Marathon event in April. We do have hope, hope that YOU, family members and friends is going to be the key driving force that we need to push us to achieve our goals and give us the strength, physically and mentally.
It’s that point in life where a change is required, a change where we could help the more unfortunate people than us. Thank God that our children and we are able to do things, hear things and most importantly see things as a normal way of life. For those unfortunate ones imagine the difficulty without sight, not knowing the meaning of green grass, blue sky and white snow. Imagine the feelings of those mothers who know that their child has never seen anything other than darkness, imagine the feelings of a child who has grown up and seen the world that can’t now be seen by their own parents during their final few years of life. YOU, Harjit and I and can now make a difference with VISTA, a registered charity (www.vistablind.org.uk) close to our hearts. With our commitment, your help and donations VISTA can provide these vital services and support to children and adults with sight loss, learning disabilities, dementia and people with dual sensory impairment.
We’re not going to lie …it’s going to be hard ...very, very hard and it’s not going to get any easier, we’re hoping for the support from YOU and VISTA, we can achieve our target of raising £5,000 over the next 3 months with all proceedings going to VISTA. This is the first ever charity that Harjit and I have ever done on this scale, so let’s start 2014 with helping those in need and less fortunate than us, …please …please …please dig deep in those pockets, purses, shares, bonds, kids piggy banks etc. etc. to help us achieve our target. Over the past 10 years, the London Marathon is something that we’ve always wanted to do, as quoted by Sir John Marks Templeton “The person who really wants to do something finds a way; the other finds an excuse.”... Harjit and I for sure, have run out of excuses….
