GUSA Get Active · 14 November 2014

Around since 1923, SAMH currently operates over 60 services in communities across Scotland. These services together with our national programme work in See Me, respectme, suicide prevention, sport and physical activity; inform our policy and campaign work to influence positive social change.

Story

On Friday the 14th of November, GUSA are running an event in conjunction with SAMH - The Scottish Association For Mental Health called GUSA Get Active. The GUSA Council shall be undertaking an 18 hour continuous cycle to promote good mental health through physical activity. GUSA are supporting SAMH's 'Standing Together For Mental Health' and 'Get Active' campaigns, both led by SAMH's ambassador Sir Chris Hoy.

Come find the GUSA council pedaling away outside the GUSA office (opposite the Stevenson building on Oakfield avenue) from 7am on Friday the 14th through until 1am on Saturday morning, and get involved by taking a turn on a bike. We shall be selling healthy snacks and bakes, giving away freebies and running competitions with fabulous prizes all in aid of SAMH. Sponsor us here, or come donate on the day, all funds raised shall be given to SAMH's Get Active campaign.

Help us spread a better awareness amongst the student body here at Glasgow about the importance of good mental wellbeing, and the huge positive impact an active lifestyle can have.

The 'Standing Together For Mental Health' campaign aims to raise awareness of mental health issues, address stigma, reduce inequality and improve mental health across Scotland. Each person that signs up to 'take a stand' fills a seat in a virtual Sir Chris Hoy velodrome, go to http://standtogether.org.uk/ to take a look or sign up yourself. GUSA shall be aiming to fill a whole section of the virtual velodrome with Glasgow University students who sign up to support the campaign. We shall also be counting the number of laps of the virtual Sir Chris Hoy velodrome that we complete across two bikes, in the 18 hours.

All funds raised shall be given to SAMH to support their 'Get Active' campaign, a National Programme dedicated to improving mental health through sport and activity. GUSA and SAMH believe in good mental health and well-being for all, and sport and physical activity plays such an important role in helping to achieve this.
