Story

In memory of our Dad - 22 October 1962 to 2 May 2020

Our dad, Gus strongly believed in justice for all and worked relentlessly to help people in legal difficulties. Having faced racism himself he was vehemently against police brutality and racism. Being a scholar of religion and cultures. He loved to explore different cultures from their cuisines to their communities and had great respect for all. He would take the time to teach and listen. He was extremely intelligent and was an electrical engineer having been chosen to attend a grammar school. He was very creative, he loved art and drew many pictures including portraits in pastels and pencil. He was very loving and kind to his children and remained close to friends he has said since school.

His most important interest was reading. He would read for hours and hours and never tire. He adored learning and trying new things. He was also silly and liked cartoons and comic books.

Our father believed you could do anything and encouraged us children to be the best we could. He wanted people to do well in life. Due to this we feel that the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust is a charity our dad would want you to support for him. Helping young people achieve their goals and aims is something our dad would support. As he always said knowledge is power.

We would be grateful if you would spare some money to provide to the charity and leave a short note in honour of our dad.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your donation.

The Charity

The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust does not accept that your background should limit what you can achieve. They work with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds aged 13 to 30 to broaden their view of what’s possible. They help them to gain the knowledge, skills, and qualifications they need to pursue the career of their choice, and they support them to progress through the early stages of their career. The Trust also work with community groups, companies and others to create a fairer society in which everyone can thrive.

Like our father the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust knows that creating a society that is fairer to all will take time. The trust is already making a difference to the people they work with every day, and this is being carried into the rest of their lives. Their vision is that every person, regardless of their background, has the opportunity and support to flourish in a society that treats them with fairness and respect.

A lot has changed since Stephen Lawrence’s murder in a racist attack in 1993, but some things have stayed the same. Too many young people still struggle to succeed because they are disadvantaged by factors beyond their control, such as where they are born, the school they go to, or any discrimination they may face.

We believe:

  • All young people should receive the education, training and help they need to reach their potential

  • All young people should receive the information and support they need to make informed choices about their education and future careers

  • Everyone should have the opportunity to progress in their career based on their skills and abilities, not their background

  • Senior managers in every company and every industry should reflect the rich diversity of people in the UK.
