About Me

My name is James Robinson and I am a sixth year student at Peebles High School . I have decided to take a year out between school and university where I hope to go on to study engineering.  Following a week long selection course I have been chosen by the charity Project Trust to work as a volunteer abroad.  I will be teaching maths and science for 12 months in a Guyanan school (Academic year 2007-2008).

Guyana

Guyana, situated between Venezuala and Brazil, has a population of 800,000 who mainly live in and around the capital Georgetown on the costal plains.  Most of the country is made up of tropical rainforest and savannah; it is to these remote and sparsely populated areas that Project Trust sends its volunteers.

Guyanan schools suffer a chronic lack of secondary teachers and equipment.  I will be teaching maths and science in Dora a small village near the Demerrera river which is accessed by a rough track from the Georgetown to Linden Highway.

Project Trust

Project Trust, a registered charity, is a non-profit organisation that sends school leavers overseas for 12 months voluntary work in the developing world.  Based on the Isle of Coll, it has been operating since 1967. It works closely with local communities, sending volunteers only where they’re actually needed rather than taking work from local people.  Project Trust’s aim is to educate young people by giving them the opportunity to live and work overseas
