At Christians Against Poverty, we equip local churches to support people facing debt and other financial challenges. We campaign for a redesigned society that works for everyone, including those on the lowest incomes. Find out more about us at capuk.org or follow us on social media.

Story

Generosity is at the heart of CAP, please be generous & be part of the work we do to change more people's lives like Marzenna's.

I've been working with CAP now for nearly 2 years and have been privileged to see people set free from the huge burden of unmanagable debt.

Setting budgets & liaising with creditors to help people take control of their finances is just one, obvious part of the work we do.  Often we are providing groceries for households struggling to buy adequate food & going hungry, sourcing some clothes for those unable to afford any, decorating homes which are in disrepair.

Many clients have withdrawn from community due to the shame they experience from having debt. Another facet of our work is to help people put such debilitating shame and isolation behind them. Clients are invited to events where they will know they are accepted, they are not alone and that they are absolute heroes for tackling their problems.

In the photo (below)you see Marzenna (centre) with Beryl, one of my volunteers celebrating her 60th birthday- debt free! When I first visited Marze, she was shivering in her front room which was down to bare shoddy plaster-work: unable to afford adequate heating or food. During the course of working with us to get get debt-free, we supported her with occasional food shops, we bought her some gas & electric during the snow & decorated her lounge. She also made a friend in Beryl & also began volunteering at our church toddler group. Her life looks very different now.
