Story
Dad passed away on 19 March 2022. The great Welsh hymn Pantyfedwen was playing when this happened. The first 2 lines, translated into English, are:
You did this mighty deed, Oh! Christ God's son,
You gave me joy anew the race to run;
He ran the race with joy in his heart. Christ was a real presence in his life, daily. And he lived his life with one foot in heaven, not because of anything he achieved but sure in Christ’s promise to all who believe. His race is finished. Both feet are now firmly planted in God’s presence. The family are thankful for this, and a full life lived in Christ.
Dad was a Reader in Civil Engineering at Nottingham University, having gained his degree and PhD from the University of Wales, Swansea. He specialised in bridges and, in particular steel tubular structures, having sat on international committees impacting design standards. He worked for the engineering consultancy Rendel Palmer & Tritton in London before becoming a site engineer on the Heads of the Valley Road (A465) in Wales. In particular, he was responsible for the Taf Fechan spanning bridge in Merthyr Tydfil. He then became a lecturer in Nottingham.
His faith was woven into his academic life. He supported the professional arm of UCCF, spoke at Christian Unions and, in particular, had a heart for the undergraduate and postgraduate students from every nation, that came to Nottingham.
Dad asked that a sizeable donation be made to UCCF when he died to show how much he valued the work of UCCF.
His ThanksGiving Service will be at Cornerstone Church, Nottingham, 2.00pm Friday 29 April 2022. You can watch the service on the Cornerstone Church YouTube Channel.
