Story
My nan, Olive Beckett, passed away in May this year. She was a huge part of my life and family – losing her was far from easy.
Following a fall resulting in a bad break in her leg, she spent a period in hospital but was eventually allowed to return to her lifelong home of over 60 years and be cared for by her family with the help of regular visits from nurses.
Once my nan’s condition started to deteriorate, we sought help and advice from the doctor who advised us that she is experiencing end of life symptoms. We contacted our local hospice, (Greenwich and Bexley Hospice) who offered my nan a place in the hospice but my nan wanted to remain with her family. Within hours my nan’s condition deteriorated even further to which the hospice recommended morphine is administered to help her pass in comfort. They managed all arrangements to have this medication provided. She passed peacefully in a matter of hours later. Since then, the Hospice contacted us on multiple occasions to offer their assistance in the various arrangements that have to be made.
The Greenwich and Bexley Hospice is a charity close to my nans heart that received financial help from my nan prior to her passing. They are an excellent charity that provide an invaluable service.
In June 2022, I will be walking Hadrian’s wall in memory of my nan and to raise vital funds for the hospice. I will be walking from Carlisle to Wallsend racking up a mileage of over 70 miles over 4 days.
My training has already begun. Given my fitness level I’m sure you’d all agree the challenge ahead is huge! I will keep regular updates over social media showing my progress in miles and the various hikes as I move closer to my 20 mile a day target.
If you can, please donate to this cause. Your help, however big or small, will not go unappreciated and will ultimately help others spend their final days in comfort and with dignity.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
