Issue
Lebanon's economic crisis , exacerbated by the Beirut Port explosion and the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in the majority of its population living in multidimensional poverty with 78% living below the poverty line. At the same time, the price of menstrual products has risen by 500%. For women in Lebanon, this has led to a case of choosing between food or hygiene items.
What is period poverty?
Period Poverty is the lack of access to menstrual products, a safe and hygienic place in which to use them and the right to manage menstruation without shame or stigma.
How does this affect Lebanon's refugee population?
Lebanon hosts the largest number of refugees per capita in the world. For women and young girls residing in Lebanon's refugee camps, period poverty is much more complicated, humiliating and sad.
Long distances to a private toilet, little or no electricity, no locks on toilet doors, unhygienic standards and irregular access to menstrual products are just some of the challenges they face.
With no other options in sight, many are forced to find alternatives such as newspapers, old cloths/rags or tissue paper, which may be unhygienic, leading to further problems like health issues that they simply cannot afford to treat.
How can you help?
A group of volunteers are travelling to Lebanon with the charity Jigsaw to distribute Dignity Kits which cost £15 per kit. These are filled with a selection of hygiene items and menstrual products that will be distributed in refugee camps and other needy areas in Lebanon.
Please help us preserve the dignity of women and young girls in Lebanon by donating whatever you can.
*Any excess funds raised will be used to donate food items.
