Every day in the UK, another 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing lifelong support for all stroke survivors and their families.

Story

Last month my nan, Dorothy Mulkeen, passed away.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was loved by many.

She spent many years volunteering at the Stroke Club in Sutton Coldfield following the support given to her late husband John from the Stroke Association after he suffered from strokes.

As a way of giving back to the charity, and in memory of both of my grandparents, I ran the Autumn Shakespeare Half Marathon on 14 November.

Stupidly, I gave myself just five weeks to train for it (hence why I'm calling this a 'half in five'). I could have chosen a race a bit later in the year or even next year, but this one took place just a few days before what would have been my nan's birthday so it seemed fitting.

And if ever my nan made a promise, she would stick to it, so I'm now committing myself to this challenge.
