Our year's theme as a school is to challenge ourselves. With that in mind, we wanted to have a challenge that would not only be hard but also meaningful. We have chosen to sleep as a homeless person would and raise money for the charity Routes to Roots. A volunteer from the charity came and talked to us about what the organisation does and here are words from the girls about the talk and why we are raising money for this charity.
'We are sleeping in the gym to help people who have lives much harder than ours. These people have no support or help. Help us give people a second chance at life and give them another shot to put things right. You will give money per hour so we can bail out if we need to. Please give generously so we have a goal to meet.' Izzy B.
'The charity Routes to Roots goes looking for homeless people and invite them in for a meal and to help them with their problems, eg. financial. They also give them some equipment to help them and give food to their dogs. I think it is so good they are looking after their community.' Olivia S.
'You really understood the meaning of what homelessness was and how people could become homeless and how Routes to Routes deals with it, with addiction and depression.' Adesola
'Lots of the homeless don't have the support of friends and family, this is where Routes to Roots come in. They give homeless the chance to have a hot meal, get clean clothes, shower, meet and interact with people facing a similar problem, have sleeping bags and food and toiletries.' Octavia T.
'I like how the charity helps the homeless to get a job. They can use Routes to Roots' computers and phones and even their address so they can find a job. I think this charity is really amazing, helpful and kind to the community.' Antonia
