At 6.20am on Boxing Day I reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro and at 5895 metres the highest point in Africa. In total I walked 96 kilometres across seven days via the Machame Route which is generally regarded as more challenging than the more popular Marangu route but was chosen because of the higher success rate due to greater opportunity for acclimatisation.

I was part of a group of seven making the summit attempt together supported by a team of approximately 25 porters and guides.

On Christmas we started out at midnight and climbed 1345 metres in a largely unmarked path of sand and scree from our base camp at Barafu to Uhuru Peak. It took a little under six and a half hours to reach the top where we watched the sun rise before the -10 C tempretures gave way to relentless sunshine in the Alpine desert through which we had to make our 23 km descent before resting for the night.

This is the most physically challenging thing I have ever done and I am still amazed I made it to the top and back again, largely thanks to the wonderful team of guides and porters who supported us. It took about a week for all the aches and pains to subside. It helped to know you were all rooting for me.
