Every time I get outside training it feels like I have an adventure. Whether it be for half an hour, all day or longer this keeps me happy and soon wipes away and stress I may have. It has struck me training for this race how lucky I am to have these opportunities which is why I wanted to support CHICKS to provide outdoor experiences and respite breaks for young people in Britain who really need it.
They have 3 centres in Derbyshire, Cornwall and Dartmoor - wonderful places for an adventure. Children aged 8-15 can be nominated by teachers or social workers and come from a background of bullying, being a young carer, poverty or bereavement amongst other things. They get a week of holiday full of adventure and activities and to follow this up a memory bag and maybe repeat trips if they are still under the same circumstances.
This race on 1st December, at the end of the earth is genuinely going to be hard for me. The water will be cold - around 12 degrees. Usually in this water I get freezing, often lose use of my hands and turn into a shivering wreck. To acclimatise I have done cold swims (6 degrees in snow) and showers. The bike and run will be beautiful but long, lonely and hilly too! Hopefully these will be made easier by the hours spent on the roads and trails over here, as well as hard sessions sweating on the indoor trainer!
Here is where the money you give will go:
£10 - memory bag
£49 - Home cooked meals for 1 child for the week
£120 - Activities for a child
£350 - Kayaking trip for 16 children
£1008 - A weeks holiday for 1 child
Please be generous and to help these children have some well deserved fun and create memories. (And help me get through that swim, bike and run)
I am number 151 and Matt number 49. Not sure if there will be a race tracker... but will keep you posted!
