I am doing a sponsored sleep out to raise money for the homeless people on the 3rd March at the back of Marks and Spencer’s in Friar Street, Reading Town Centre.
Every Wednesday I take part in an outreach program and set up a food kitchen to feed people in need. These people can be homeless or simply not have enough money in their pocket to feed themselves.
We tend to judge a book by its cover but there are many different reasons why people are put in these positions.
The Langar or free kitchen was started by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji in about 1481. It is designed to uphold the principle of equality between all people of the world regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status; to eliminate extreme poverty in the world and to bring about the birth of "caring communities". In addition to the ideals of equality, the tradition of Langar expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness and oneness of all humankind. "..the Light of God is in all hearts."
