Hi my name is Harry Moncur and my friend is Mike Andrews.
Mike and myself both live in the village of Winterslow, near Salisbury in Wiltshire. We are both retired police officers, having served with the Wiltshire Constabulary. Mike is 64, and I am 55.
Mike and I started cycling together about 18 years ago, when we trained for a charity bike ride from Salisbury's twin town, Saintes in south west France, back to Salisbury. We completed this 500 mile journey in 5 days, along with 4 other colleagues.
Since then, due to my back injury I have not kept up the cycling. Mike has however, competing in several cycling and triathlon events, as well as his other sport, kayaking. In 2007 he cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats in just 3.5 days. Last year he kayaked the Caledonian Canal both ways, a total of 125 miles, in 5 days. Not bad for an old man!
My enthusiasm for cycling was rekindled about 12 months ago after reading several books about people who had cycled around the world. I thought if they can go all around the world, I should be able to do 1500 miles, shouldn't I? I had an idea of a route through France, and after a chat with Mike, our challenge was born.
The Challenge.
20th May 2012-10th June 2012
To cycle totally unaided, carrying everything for the three week expedition on our bikes, from our home village of Winterslow to Portsmouth. Here we will catch the overnight ferry to St Malo. Then we will travel down the west coast of France to the Pyreneese mountains. We aim to cover about 100 miles each day, ending each stage at a campsite.
Upon reaching the Pyrenees we will tackle the Col de Aubisque. The ascent is over 30 km long and climbs 1247 meters. Then on the same day comes the ' big one' , The Col de Tourmalat. Although not as long as the Aubisque we will climb another 1400 meters , covering a further 19 km. The next day we will climb the 'baby'. The Col de Aspin. A 12 km climb, taking us up another 780 meters. We will then head south through the Bielsa tunnel into Spain and onto the town of Ainsa. We will then cycle back over the mountains, hopefully by the easy route, and travel north back to St. Malo, catching the ferry to Portsmouth. Then cycling the 35 miles back home to Winterslow.
Our plan has been to raise sponsorship money and donate to two charities, with Help for Hero's being one of our choices. Following the untimely death of David Rathband, we were made aware of his charity, The Blue Lamp Foundation. As ex police officers we have decided that we would like to make David's charity our main focus.
