Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
This is a cause that is very close to my heart. Every year the UK government detains over 24,000 people as part of the 'hostile environment' they have deliberately created for immigrants in this country. These detention centres- some of them run by private corporations for profit - detain people for periods ranging from days to several years. These are often people who have lived in the UK since childhood, including the Windrush generation, or people fleeing climate change, war and persecution.
The conditions to which these detainees are subjected are nothing short of monstrous. Just this year it was revealed that survivors of torture had been put into prolonged solitary confinement, breaching the UN’s minimum standards for the treatment of prisoners, according to Bail for Immigration Detainees. Many of these people's only crime is wanting a safe, welcoming environment for themselves and their families.
As the Home Office relentlessly pursues its crusade against immigrants, charities like Detention Action are doing crucial work in defending the rights and fighting to improve the welfare of people in immigration detention, as well as raising awareness of the cruelty on which these detention centres are built. They support thousands of detained people and promote community-based initiatives to improve integration in this country, as well as working with legal groups to prevent deportation flights.
Crises that we in Britain are disproportionately responsible for - climate breakdown, imperialist occupations and the destabilisation of entire regions - will only mean that immigration is going to increase in the coming years. But the government is taking no responsibility. Priti Patel's response is the constriction of callous and inhumane Australia-style offshore detention centres. It really doesn't have to be this way. By supporting charities like Detention Action we can start to promote a kinder alternative, in which people are welcomed into our country and our communities.
