Story

CHUF's mission is to make life better for children and young people who are born with or who develop heart conditions by providing lifelong support to them and their families. CHUF supports children and families who receive treatment at the Children’s Heart Unit based at the Freeman Hospital and the many other hospitals providing care for cardiac patients throughout the North of England.

Including helping the fletching of own very own Codex to get the heart support they needed at such a young age, such a brave little heart hero.

Codex: My Son was born in June 2016 with heart failure and a severe Congenital Heart Defect called Aortic Stenosis. Children are born with a Congenital Heart Defect, and Congenital Heart Disease is the ongoing aspect, as well as complications that the Child and their parents must live with every day. He spent the first 5 months of his life in the Children's Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital undergoing 4 surgical procedures before having major open heart surgery at just four months old, to repair and correct the defect and attempt to reduce the heart failure in his left ventricle. After the surgery He suffered a Cardiac Arrest and was placed on a heart and lung bypass machine (ECMO) to allow his heart to heal and recover. During this time he was in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) which is also part of the Children's Heart Unit. After a lot of set backs and so many ups and downs, my son was allowed to go home in October 2016. In September 2018 he underwent another Open Heart Surgery to replace his donor valve. He will never be "fixed". He will never be a "normal little boy", but thanks to the amazing Doctors, Consultants, Nurses and Intensivists at the Freeman Hospital he is still here, still fighting, and still smiling. The Children's Heart Unit Fund is the official charity for this amazing facility. Without the funds raised by CHUF the PICU would not have had the ECMO machine that saved my son’s life, as well as countless other pieces of equipment. Without these funds Ward 23 (the Children's Heart Ward) would not have the state of the art High Dependency Unit (HDU) in which we spent the majority of his hospital stay.
