Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My colleague Tom and I are sleeping rough in Bedford this November because we feel passionately that everybody deserves a safe and warm place to stay and somewhere that they can call home.

Both Tom and I work at Fine & Country Bedford, and every day on our way into work, we walk past numerous homeless people who have been on the streets for varying numbers of years.

Having spoken to some of the regulars we all see on a daily basis, whether it's by the payment machines at Lurke Street, or throughout the town centre, Tom and I are putting ourselves in their shoes to understand more about their situation.

The temperature has already started to drop and many of us will have the luxury of central heating, a warm bed and hot food to help us through another British winter. This is the most crucial time of the year to help homeless people find either temporary or permanent accommodation. For this reason we urge you to give generously or as much as you can to help us support as many homeless people as we can.

The following day we will be going back to the office and trying to continue our regular work. This is the time that the experience of sleeping on the streets will take its toll as sleep deprivation and freezing temperatures prevent us from a good night's sleep.

About the charity

The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. Last year, the Government estimated around 2,414 people sleep on the street on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over three years. Often the reasons for homelessness are misunderstood, with many blaming the individuals for poor life decisions and carelessness. The reality is: people become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons that cannot be avoided, such as family breakdowns, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness does not only involve putting a roof over people’s heads, it is also trying to tackle the root of the problem and asking the question: why did they became homeless in the first place? The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents in over 300 locations worldwide to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness whilst supporting homeless charities.
