Edinburgh Marathon 2011 · 22 May 2011 ·

As the East Midlands’ only hospice for children and young people, we brighten the short lives of babies, children and young people who come to Rainbows. We want them to have fun and make special memories. We are also here to support their loved ones through the most difficult times of their lives.

Story

Well hello and thanks for dropping by.

Where do I start? Thats a question I often ask myself. Well I am running for an amazing purpose this year. Admittedly I saw them as a random google ad and close reading of what they do for life-limited kids on a daily basis is exhaustive!

The backstory is that in 1993 I was profoundly changed by the passing away of my sister, Jenny Lam from a 5 year battle with cancer; she was 13 years old. I had a lot of growing up to do and fast. As she was only shy of a year older than myself we were practically like twins and so I took the insidious effects of what this termnal condition was doing to my sister very personally. In some cases I still do have major issues with paediatric cancer; my conviction is that a child should live to become an adult and not have to live in fear of their life being cut short prematurely. There is the often resounding quote that "life is very short", to my sister Jenny and of so many harrowing testimonies of other children it becomes an actuality. The actuality of living between the complexities of life and yet a simple realisation that all of these children have to fight so very hard to survive, to live bravely and to reassure their family that they are not in pain. So these children live and experience well beyond their years.

So why run my heart out for them and to do so with a massive smile on my face? Rainbows is hospice that relieves symptoms, improve quaity of life, support parents and siblings throiugh their bereavement and care for children until the end. Or as the hospice esteem, they promote their young patients to play, laugh and love life. Specifically it meets the needs for children in the East Midlands area who have either life threatening or life-limiting conditons. The facility has multi- sensory facilities, play rooms adapted accomodation, a hydrotherapy pool and a music room to name a few. It costs 3.8 million pounds per year and they sadly receive very little government funding, so any support whasoever is vital.

I have a strong sustained belief and commitment to this charity and envision that I will continue to remain in contact after the marathon. Any donations will be gratefully accepted and will help maintain palliative care and emotional support to these children and their families.
