Story
The IMPACT group from Hope Community Church Aintree are taking on the Slum Survivor Challenge on 6&7th April 2019. In doing Slum Survivor we’ll choose to spend a day & night the way a billion people who live in the world slums spend their lifetime. We build and live in our own slum houses (built out of basic discarded materials). We will eat simple food. We will face restrictions in what clothing and personal items we can bring. We will compete in challenges that simulate aspects of slum life. We will also spend time in worship and prayer, reflecting on how we can respond to God’s heart for justice.
The Slum Survivor challenge is not easy… but fact is that many live every day of their lives without access to running water, electricity, security or even decent shelter. Slum Survivor helps us understand the daily reality of those living in a slum, whilst at the same time raising money for work within poor communities throughout the world through the sponsorship of those taking part.
The money we raise for Tearfund's Matched Giving Appeal, before 17 May, will be doubled by the UK government, up to £3 million. Donations to this appeal will help Tearfund transform lives in countries where the need is greatest.Match funding from the UK government will be used to tackle waste around the world. In Pakistan, for example, this funding will support our partners to set up innovative recycling hubs in some of the poorest slum communities. These hubs will help tackle plastic pollution, provide sustainable livelihoods and improve peoples health and living conditions.Every £42 doubled could provide waste collection for two families like Rubinas, making their local environment cleaner and safer.
