I try not to take my glasses for granted, but without them, I wouldn’t even be able to write you this message. I’m so grateful for the NHS and the private, low cost, high quality eyecare we enjoy here in England, because without it, simply put, I wouldn’t be able to see properly, work, drive or live life well.

However, even the simplest, proper eyecare is simply not available in Meru, Kenya. That’s why charity SeeKenya runs temporary eye clinics, where qualified opticians and trained volunteers treat as many people who need eyecare as they can, to improve their sight, their lives and their futures…  

For the last few years, I have been financially supporting SeeKenya, which runs life-changing eyecare clinics in Meru, because I know that giving someone back their sight gives them back their life, be it education, a thriving livelihood, or even basic survival!

The clinics SeeKenya runs provide the only proper eyecare available to people in this area (and indeed across Kenya). They would not run without the time given up by volunteers and the people who so generously support them.

In February 2019 I am able to give my time and so am volunteering to be part of the clinic team for two weeks, so that more people can receive the life-changing eye care they desperately need.

On the last trip alone, the team helped over 1,300 people – but they had to turn more away as they simply didn’t have the resources to help more. That’s why they continue to go back – and why I want to give my time – so that no-one needs miss out on the type of care that’s so readily available here in England.

However, I need some help in raising the £1,400 it costs for my training and travel to be part of the team. I would be very grateful if you can sponsor me to help make it happen.  

I know that any gift you give will play a part in improving the sight and lives of many Kenyan people.

Here’s just one of the many stories about how giving someone better sight can change their lives.

12 year old Deborah came with her mother to see the SeeKenya team back in October 2012. She arrived at the clinic clearly suffering from the eye disease trachoma. Having been assessed by the team at the clinic, she was given some drops and oral antibiotics to treat trachoma.

One year later Deborah made a return visit to the clinic in Meru to thank the team for their help. Her eyes have been healed of trachoma and she is now able to go to school and her future is full of hope. During this return visit Deborah also received a pair of sunglasses to protect her against any future eye infections.

Deborah’s story sums up why SeeKenya exists to provide vital medicines to those without access to basic eye care. For the cost of less than £1 Deborah was given eye drops to help clear the trachoma and restore her sight.
