Story

I am a pupil at Brighton College with family ties to Malawi and, as part of my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, I am raising money for The Friends of WESM Blantyre. This is in memory of Martin Horrocks who was a personal friend and very active member of WESM Blantyre.

The Friend’s WESM Blantyre is a UK based charity that supports the great wildlife conservation work of the Blantyre Branch of the Wildlife and Environmental  Society of Malawi (WESM Blantyre).

All funds donated through this page will be gratefully received and will go towards WESM Blantyre’s general activities, as follows:

  • Planting of over 130,000 tree seedlings through our school and community wildlife clubs in Mwanza, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Blantyre and Neno.
  • Supporting national park visits for over 6,700 young people participating in WESM-supported wildlife clubs; such visits often represent the first time students see large game such as elephants and buffalo.
  • Environmental education officer visits to over wildlife 200 clubs to educate, raise awareness and provide material support for tree-planting and conservation activities.
  • Recruitment of 11 new wildlife clubs into the WESM Blantyre network.
  • Monitoring visits to inspect the 175,000 trees planted and raised by clubs in the 2018-2019 tree-planting season. Over half of the sites were visited and over 80% of those seedlings are growing well.
  • Over 90 club patrons trained in conservation-based enterprises including recycling, beekeeping, briquettes making, and tree nursery establishment.
  • 34 wildlife club committee meetings to bring together the teachers who run wildlife clubs for briefings, training and networks building.
  • Continued support of protected areas, including national parks Michiru Nature Sanctuary, Lengwe National Park and Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve.
  • 53rd Annual Lengwe Game Count to record to species and number of mammals in the park.
  • Support of scientific research Wild Dogs and Lilian’s Lovebirds.
