Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
In 2015 Heather got the opportunity to visit Jinja in Uganda as part of a Uni of Manchester trip to support SALVE (Support And Love Via Education) International, to contribute to their work of helping children return to safe homes after fleeing to the streets. This January, Heather and Sam will be heading back for a fundraising hike in Uganda to support SALVE.

More about the 15 years of SALVE
This fundraiser is to celebrate 15 years of SALVE operating. Within that time Nicola (based in the UK) and Alfred (based in Uganda) have employed multiple social workers within Uganda to work with children living on the streets and support them to transition back to safe and healthy lives. Whilst living on the street, children are exposed to police brutality, drugs and harm from older children, and they get money to survive by collecting and selling plastic bottles.
Many children have run away from home because they may be struggling at school and feel bad for their parents paying for their education, or are having issues with parents, and there isn't the government support systems in place to help in these times. SALVE get to know children over time, and when children are ready they support them through the following ways:
SALVE's child sponsorship program means children are financially supported to return to education.
SALVE's Rehab program supports children to overcome addictions to drugs they relied on whilst living on the street.
SALVE's halfway home, gives them a safe place to live off the streets before they are reunited with family members if it is safe to do so.
Home tracing and Family reunification program connects them with family members and resettles them there.
Family business empowerment program works with the children's families to address financial needs, and give them the tools to set up their own businesses so they can thrive in their communities.

We will be hiking up Mount Elgon and helping with a Kids club as part of our fundraiser for SALVE International
After years of keeping in touch and supporting where possible, the opportunity has arisen for Heather and Sam to go to Uganda to do a fundraiser 5 day hike up Mount Elgon in Uganda, the 2nd highest mountain in Uganda at a height of 4321m.

We will be part of a group of 10-15 people from the UK on this trip and will spend 2 weeks there. During this time we will run activity clubs with the children, where Sam will be using all of his many years of leading youth work programs and Heather will dust off her environmental and craft lessons.
