Last year should have been the 40th Great North Run. As we’re all aware last year nobody got to do anything that was planned or fun and the run was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. So myself and Paul Sharman created our own challenge and ran 13 miles every week for 13 weeks, ending in our own socially-distant virtual half marathon attempts in September, which was amazing but not half as much fun without the friendly Geordie spectators.
This year the Great North Run is actually happening! Due to the course alteration we’re going to get to run over the Tyne Bridge twice and run round the streets of the toon as well.
This is the reason we’re running to raise money for MDUK…
My son, and Paul’s godson, Daniel, was diagnosed with Collagen related Congenital Muscular Dystrophy almost 4 years ago, when he was just 3 years old. The condition means that he cannot stand or walk, uses a wheelchair full time and is likely to have other issues to contend with in the future like scoliosis and breathing problems. It’s a huge diagnosis but those of you who know Daniel know that he doesn’t let it hold him back.
MDUK do amazing work supporting families like ours and also fund pioneering research looking for much needed treatments for this condition.
We are so very grateful for everyone who donated to our challenge last year and the money we raised is already making a difference to people living with Muscular Dystrophy. We will share some pics of training and the big run in September and will be also very grateful for any further donations.
