Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Jim Bourne was Heather's Grandad and he died of Lung Cancer 18 months before she was born.

He worked at Lucas’ for 40 years and he retired from there in October 1973 when he was 65, and at that time he already had a persistent cough.  Despite his wife Doris asking him to go to the Doctor he put this off and when he did finally go he was sent to the Chest Hospital for an x-ray. The shock of the x-ray was that it showed my Granddad’s lungs were almost non-existent because of the cancer and he had difficulty breathing.

Jim’s last few weeks were spent at home and then just before Christmas 1973, when Heather's sister was just 1 year old he went into East Midlands Hospital – now Heartlands – where he died on New Year’s Day 1974.

Please, please if you have any cause for concern about any cough or lumps go to your Doctor.  Don’t be like my Grandad Jim – just stories and photos because you left it too late be persistent and don’t give up.
