We School and educate poor children to Providing hope and improving lives

Story

Run entirely by unpaid volunteers in the UK, Educate The Kids has, in it's 22 years, provided an education to around 13,000 poor rural Kenyan children who would otherwise have had no schooling at all.  We currently have 840 children being supported by the charity, over 600 in our kindergarten and primary school, Jolaurabi.

Every penny goes towards the education of the children - there are no offices (apart from the Head teacher's office in Kenya!), no paid officers - we only pay teachers, security and ancillary staff working in Kenya. That means we can do what we do for just £11 sponsorship per month per child!  This includes two meals a day, uniform and shoes throughout their time with us and an excellent all round education.  And our pupils are excelling!

Most of these children live in mud huts with leaf roofs, no electricity and no running water; usually crammed into a small space with the entire family, sleeping on a mat on the floor and doing homework by the light of a lit rag in tin of kerosene!  Unbelievable that this still happens in 2020!  These children cannot afford the 'free' state schools as the uniforms and exam fees are a bridge too far.  This charity has been restricted by space in the number of these destitute children we can enrol every year.  These 10 new classrooms will give us room to bring more children in, provide an even more enriched education as we will have a dedicated science room, a sewing room, and space and facilities to teach more vocational skills such as woodwork.

The new space includes an indoor kitchen which will provide two free meals a day to these children; almost always the only meals they get each day.  This appeal will enable the ovens to be purchased.  The food, kitchen staff and utilities are all financed through the £11 per months per child sponsorship scheme.

The charity's motto is: 'A hand up, not a handout'.  If you could see fit to helping us build an even stronger platform for these children by donating to this appeal, you would be extending another helping hand to these children; all of whom gratefully receive that hand up, cherish the education they are given and excel!  Many ex-pupils are now teachers at school; others include politicians, Masters Graduates, local business and social leaders and International business people.

We will use every penny to the advantage of the children and report back as we progress the project.  Many thanks indeed for taking the time to read this and hopefully for your donation.

We are also appealing for such items as laptops, interactive whiteboards and other technological equipment, a photocopier and laminators.  These we are able to ship across in April.  If you can help or know of anyone who could help us please email maureensca@yahoo.co.uk or heatherjmunro@yahoo.co.uk.

Thank you, or, as the Kenyan children would say, asante sana!
