Story

Wow what an incredible day! After the truly horrific weather we had yesterday, the idea of trudging around in the peak district in the pouring rain really wasn't something we were looking forward to, and yet! We barely had a drop of rain all day, we had bright sunshine for most of it and we had really amazing views during what somehow turned into to a 28 miler!

We saw so many other people taking on the virtual London Marathon, with everyone giving us a wave, nod and a "well done" to encourage us along the way. At the half way mark we had a tactically-timed, relay-style handover of coffee which was oh so welcome! We had a wealth of family and friends that met us along the way which was amazing and we can't thank you all enough. As we reached Tissington, 3 miles before the end, we were met by 25+ complete strangers who all started to cheer, clap and congratulate us all which was just amazing!

We had such an amazing day that we really will remember for the rest of our lives.  We're all completely blown away by what we've raised and want to thank each and every person that sponsored us, wished us well and sent messages, it all means so much.  Thanks to you, Macmillan will be receving a huge amount of money that we never imagined we could raise, we really can't thank you all enough!

Sadly, cancer is something that affects every family. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Charities like Macmillan need your money to help them with the vital support they offer individuals and families at the most difficult moments in their lives.

Macmillan desperately need your help! 98% of their income comes from donations and it is currently facing the hardest year in its 109-year existence. It faces a 71% drop in it's income JUST from its coffee morning events risking a £20m fundraising fall. To put this in perspective, this could risk more than 80,000 cancer patients missing out on support from a Macmillan nurse in 2021 and beyond.

To try and help in some small way, the three of us have decided to take part in this year’s virtual London Marathon. As the event was cancelled, participants can choose their own route to take part and submit their evidence of completing it. We've chosen the White Peak Trails and on 4th October plan to take on the 27 miles from Cromford to Ashbourne, first tackling the High Peak Trail and then the Tissington Trail.

Karl: I'm taking part in memory of two of my grandparents that both bravely fought cancer. Sadly they both passed away before our children were born. My Grandad tragically lost his short battle with lung cancer shortly after his 73rd birthday, he was never a smoker. Grandad was a wonderful man who always put family first. He would do anything to help anyone and would always be there to lend a hand. My Nan beat cancer once only for it to sadly return a few years later. She was an amazing listener and was the kindest and most compassionate person you could ever meet. She tragically died 3 months before she was due to become a Great Nan for the first time.

Heather: I'm taking part in memory of my nan who was an independent and strong lady until this horrible disease took her from us too soon. I am proud that Chef & Brewer and Greene King are also fundraising across all of our pubs across the country this September and October after the plans for May were put on hold. I am sure this is going to hurt but it's nice to be able to try to raise funds for a great cause in the process.

Nobody should have to face cancer alone, so please support Macmillan to help those families during the most difficult moments in their lives.
