Story
My epically courageous sister Kate, developed Vasculitis (GPA) four years ago. I’m walking and hoping to raise awareness of this rare disease and some £££ for Vasculitis UK who not only fund much needed research, but also provide support, information and a lifeline to long term sufferers and those recently diagnosed.
Vasculitis is an autoimmune disease which causes severe inflammation of the blood vessels in the body. It can result in organ damage or death if not treated correctly & quickly. The problem is, Vasculitis is a rare disease and symptoms can be hard to recognise so often sufferers become urgently ill before treatment is started. There is no cure, but it can usually be controlled using a mixture of high dose steroids, chemotherapy and immune suppressing drugs. The side effects are tough and recovery can be very slow, unpredictable and treatment itself can last years. Some patients are able to reach full remission where no drugs are needed to manage the condition, but relapse is common.

Here’s how Vasculitis UK has helped Kate in her own words,
"Vasculitis is a life changing disease, it is rare and treatment options are limited and hard to manage. Mine primarily affects my lungs. When I was at my lowest point, newly diagnosed and desperate for help I found Vasculitis UK. They armed me to fight for what I needed to get better. Even now, after three years of treatment, the online support group really feels like a life-saver. To find others with similar experiences who can reassure, sympathise and give advice is really important. It’s a safe space to share sadness & fears, but it equally celebrates recovery. It is a place that provides hope and can help people to find joy in life even under the most challenging of circumstances. The charity is run by people with Vasculitis or those that support them. Each volunteer is pretty amazing to make the time to help others, whilst already going through so much themselves. I am thrilled to say that I am in a medically managed remission and doing very well, although vasculitis still plays a part in my daily life. Thank you for reading all this and your support!"
