Story

Who are Sue Ryder?

Sue Ryder supports people through the most difficult times of their lives. Whether that’s a terminal illness, the loss of a loved one or a neurological condition – they’re there when it matters. Their doctors, nurses and carers give people the compassion and expert care they need to help them live the best life they possibly can.

Our Story:

Hi, I'm Andy, my Father in Law, Julian, a truly wonderful human being received a terminal cancer diagnosis earlier this year.  As the weeks and months went by, the challenges he faced on a daily basis increased as the cancer took hold.

We were eventually advised to get in touch with the Sue Ryder Hospice at Nettlebed when we needed some extra help (at this point just the thought of going to a hospice terrified me to be honest).

I can say they were simply amazing. Starting with advice, care and support at home before the time came when Julian would need to stay at the hospice when the situation required it. The place felt like 20% hospital, 80% hotel to be frank and the staff were so very  welcoming to our family, some of the kindest most compassionate people I've ever met.

As I went to leave the building on the morning Julian died, I picked up a leaflet promoting the challenge of a 5K run every day for all of December, 155K in total. I mentioned doing it to my sister Helen in passing over WhatsApp and almost straight away, I got a message saying she'd do it too.

So come rain or shine we'll be getting out every single day in December (no exceptions) getting our 5KM in to hopefully raise some cash for an organisation that I'll forever feel a deep gratitude to so it can hopefully continue to help people in very challenging times.

Both me and my wife will be forever in debt to Sue Ryder, they cared for my Father in Law right until the end. All I can say is thankyou so, so much.

Andy

Hi, it’s Helen. Just my turn to add a little something - my motivation for taking part in this was to feel like, in some practical way, I was helping my sister-in-law and brother. Julian was, in so many ways, a truly special human being, evidenced in a small, lovely, way by packing his freezer with ‘ice cream mars bars’ when I came to stay.

As well as Julian, this hospice has provided special care to someone else who has been a big part of my life for many years. There will never be the right words to capture how grateful we all are for the care Sue Ryder offers and undertaking this challenge represents a small way in which we feel like we can give something back.

If you can spare a pound or two, it would mean an awful lot to us, and go some way to help continue the care that Sue Ryder offer xx
