Helen

As I was approaching my 70th birthday, I decided to celebrate and give myself a sporting challenge. In 2015 and 2016 my daughter Kate and son-in-law Ben competed in the Jersey Olympic Team Triathlon. Whilst watching this, I was inspired by the participants enthusiasm and energy and the family friendly and fun atmosphere. I discovered the super sprint distance of 400m swim, 10 k bike ride and 2.5 k run and decided that was for me.

When I developed type 1 diabetes as a young adult, I was determined to continue as before but look after myself as well as I could. It was difficult as urine testing was the only method to use at home! I needed the understanding and support of my husband Alan, family and friends. Fortunately my children took my hypos in their stride.

There was an advantage too, to having diabetes, as I felt I should take every opportunity offered to live life to the full!

I have been very fortunate and have benefitted from all the latest advances in type 1 diabetes management and support.. Through Diabetes Jersey, I would like to contribute to their support for children and young adults with type 1 diabetes in Jersey.

My daughter, Kate, said she would join me in the cause but as she could not possibly compete in the same event as her mother, she had to do the full triathlon! Granddaughters, Poppy and Ella, immediately  volunteered too and joined the Jersey Triathlon Club. Go Girls!
