In July 2021, I will be completing the 2-day, 100km endurance event 'Race to the Stones' in aid of Alzheimer's Research UK (ARUK), Britain's leading dementia research charity. 

I am taking on this challenge to both increase awareness of dementia and raise funds for the brilliant work of ARUK, and to push myself to commit to a long term goal. I hope that completing this event will be hugely satisfying as it will be both a physical and emotional achievement.

The term dementia describes a degenerative brain condition caused by different diseases, the most prevalent being Alzheimer's, and is the leading cause of death in the UK. Over 850,000 people are affected by dementia in the UK, which leads to memory loss, and difficulties in communication and thought processing.

In the past decade, ARUK has funded £66.4m of research into diagnosis and treatment of dementia and works to improve understanding of the diseases among both the scientific and general populations. 

ARUK's mission is to facilitate discovery of the first life-changing dementia treatment by 2025, and ongoing research is providing insights into potential uses of stem cells among many other projects.

I will be walking (and possibly running to the finish line!) 100km from Lewknor to Avebury Stone Circle, mostly along the ‘Ridgeway’ which is England’s oldest footpath - it's sure to be a breathtaking trek.
