London Landmarks Half Marathon 2024 · 7 April 2024 ·

Raising awareness of primary bone cancer and much needed funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust.

Story

Ok okayyyyyyy, so I ran the London Marathon a few years ago, why am I going half the distance and asking for more money? Please bear with me and take a little read...

What do you do when one of your best mates tells you they have bone cancer and this means they will never run again (to put you in the picture, this friend is Sally Saunders who has historically been an absolute running nut)? Firstly you do the obligatory and call cancer all sorts of swearwords (again) in. furious rage, have alittle cry, and then..... you allow said friend to talk you into all sorts of challenges. So here we are, another run far too long for me and my running style (which is mainly sit in front of the sofa and eat pizza). This was meant to be completed together before the C word got mentioned, so a few years on here I am with another running friend from the running group Sally still runs (as in admin not physically) it would simply be wrong not to do it her honour.

I make jokes, it's my way, but to tell you a little of the importance of BCRT.

After experiencing Sally's journey, major surgeries, femur removed, replaced and replaced, life turned upside down alongside all the normal stuff of life and having her main coping mechanism taken away - running, I have been humbled once again by another's strength and courage. Sally and I attended the BCRT conference last year to see what else we could find out and try and find Sally some similar souls. Here I learned just how little funds are given to bone cancer research in correlation to the many who are diagnosed with such a rare disease. The stories I heard were both gut renchingly sad and inspiring. I can tell you that the work being undertaken through this charity is absolutely phenomenal and life-changing, yet desperately underfunded, preventing much-needed research.

If you can give a quid or two please do, it will make a difference.

The Bone Cancer Research Trust is dedicated to saving lives & improving outcomes for people affected by primary bone cancer. Despite being small, they fund more research projects exploring primary bone cancer than any other organisation. Other large UK cancer research charities do not prioritise bone cancer patients, in 2019 just 0.028% of their research spend went to bone cancer – not even close to 1%!Last year alone, Bone Cancer Research Trust committed an incredible £807,824 to pioneering bone cancer research - to save lives!
