London to Lisbon Cycle for Oceana · 20 January 2019

Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana is rebuilding abundant and biodiverse oceans by winning science-based policies in countries that control one-third of the world’s wild fish catch.

Story

This summer Tom and I will be cycling approximately 1,000-1,500 miles (depending on how lost we get!)  from London to Lisbon in aid of Oceana. Oceana seeks to make our oceans more biodiverse and abundant by winning policy victories in the countries that govern much of the world’s marine life. Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation.

Why are oceans so important?

The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth. They generate over 50% of the oxygen we breathe and contain 97% of the world’s water. They provide at least 1/6 of the animal protein people eat. Living oceans can absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, reducing the impacts of climate change. Unfortunately, over 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the oceans every year and In European seas, 64% of fish
populations are overfished. In the Mediterranean Sea, overfishing has reached a critical 96%.
