We help people living with sight loss and other disabilities to achieve their ambitions and go beyond expectations. We believe wherever they are, everyone has the right to an independent and fulfilling life. Our support enables people and their families to build skills and develop confidence.

Story

On Sunday 14 April 2013, Jenny, Michael, Karen, Samuel, Tracey and Shelly who live in Henshaws Community Housing in Harrogate will take part in the Skipton Triathlon. The six, who all have a visual impairment and other disabilities, will work as a team to complete the 400m swim, 20km cycle and finally run 2 laps of Aireville Park.

The triathlon team has been formed thanks to new Henshaws volunteer, Alastair. With Alastair’s support, the team have begun a regular training programme. The event is a great opportunity for them and they are hoping to build on the excitement and enthusiasm from the Paralympics last year.

Karen, 31, has a severe visual impairment and will be completing the running section of the event with a guide.

“I’ve never really done any running before but we’ve started regular training with Alastair at Henshaws College and it’s slowly getting easier. I’m a very determined person so for me this is an exciting challenge!”
