UEA RAG takes on the incredible Kilimanjaro Trek with Choose a Challenge and in support of the National Autistic Society!

Story

Hi! I am Hermione, a second year university student studying Biomedicine and trying to combine my university life with making a small difference in this big world.

To do this, through “Choose a Challenge”, I am part of a university group combining an incredible venture of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in June 2022 with fundraising for the National Autistic Society.

I am pleased that the National Autistic Society is the nominated charity because both my brothers are autistic.

Most of us will be touched by autism as one in 100 children in the UK has a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (while the actual numbers of autistic people (children and adults) are much higher).

It has been through my experience with my brothers that I have come to realise just how inspiring they and other autistic people can be. They bring an approach to life - in a world that is not structured to suit neurodivergent people - that enriches us all, if only we will open our hearts and minds.

This opportunity allows me to combine my love of adventure and the challenge of climbing a “status” mountain with fund raising for a charity dedicated to supporting people with their own challenges that are not of their own making.

Your challenge is so much simpler; help me to make a difference by making use of this page and help me support the National Autistic Society.

The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.
