Facing the World was founded in 2002 to help children with severe facial disfigurements who are unable to access the surgery that they need in their own countries.

In order for this surgery to go ahead, the charity relies on the entire medical team from theatre staff to highly skilled senior consultants all generously donating their services and time free of charge. Fundraising is still required however to cover hospital, travel and accommodation costs in order for a child and one parent to come to the UK for the surgery that it is hoped will allow them to lead lives free of the stigma attached to their disfigurement in their own countries.

The staff at HFM/Columbus aim to raise £20,000 to pay for the costs of bringing one remarkable child in particular, Trang, over from Vietnam to the UK to remove a tumour from her face which will cause her to go blind, if not operated on.

In order to raise this targeted £20,000, on 30/09/07 Caroline Lavery will be running her first ever half marathon in Folkestone where she will be hoping to beat her personal best (and her personal worst!). Go girl...

On the same date, James Geard will be running a 10K run from which he aims to raise a further £2,000 towards our sponsored charity so it seems that on 30/09/07, all of us other couch potatoes may be left feeling a little 'unfit'! 

Next up is Gary Festa doing a gruelling 450km bike ride across Vietnam in November this year and which, by amazing coincidence, will result in him visiting the village where Trang lives. Hope the villagers are prepared for the sight of Gary in tight cycling shorts!

In April this year, Ali Orchard also raised money by climbing a very high wall. You could say she scaled new heights...
