Alice's Story

Alice was first diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in February 2016 and was treated with intensive chemotherapy in Cheltenham General Hospital. Whilst in Cheltenham she formed very close relationships with all those who were to care for her over the next two years. She was discharged in July 2016 and told that she was in complete remission.

In January 2017 she received the shocking news that she once again had leukaemia, she was again treated with chemotherapy in Cheltenham before being treated in Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham with a bone marrow transplant, and she thought this would be a permanent cure. After treatment and recovery Alice embraced life fully and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her family and her many close friends.

In March 2018 Alice received the shattering news that she had Residual
Molecular Leukaemia, simply put, during her bone marrow transplant a molecule of leukaemia was unfortunately left behind. Alice returned to Cheltenham hospital for further treatment, she chose to be treated in Cheltenham as she felt the staff were like a second family to her and she knew that she would receive the best possible care.

Unfortunately Alice contracted a series of serious infections that were ultimately untreatable, because of the nature of her previous treatments.

Throughout the whole period of treatment Alice always remained very positive, had a fierce determination to overcome her illness and was an incredible inspiration to her family, friends and all who met her. Alice’s family were very lucky to have been able to spend time alone and have final conversations with her.

Throughout this time Alice was determined that all of her family and friends should remember and honour her by living their lives to the fullest possible extent and not to let the massive amount of grief that they were, and would continue to feel define or limit immediate and later futures. She will be missed every single day by all those whose lives she graced.

LINC is the charity which supported Alice and her family tirelessly throughout her journey at Cheltenham Hospital. The Leukaemia & Intensive Chemotherapy Fund is a local cancer support charity that works to improve the care of patients who are receiving treatment within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
