Story

Back in 2016 I was having a bit of a down period. I had moved away from my friends, was between jobs, and just didn't feel like I was getting on track in life after finishing my bachelor's degree. I needed something to motivate me. While out jogging one day I came up with the perfect idea - I was going to run a marathon.

Seven months and lots of training later, I ran the Copenhagen Marathon in less time than anticipated. Through all the physical pain and strain, it felt incredible to have set a goal, worked towards it, and achieved it. No matter how much I didn't want, I got up every weekend and trained. Now I have a shiny medal I can look at every day.

It was nice to not have to worry about my training plan once the marathon was over. But after a few months, I started getting antsy to do something again. I've taken on and completed some smaller projects, and now it's time for a proper challenge - something I've never done before.

By the end of 2018, I plan to have walked 200 km of the Black Forest. Why? Because I never have. I've spent too much time complaining about where I am rather than taking advantage of the splendours every new place has to offer. The Black Forest is right outside my doorstep and yet I still always say, "I should go hiking here sometime," rather than going out and actually doing it. I need some proper motivation so I don't let this incredible opportunity pass me by.

This time, I want to raise money while I'm doing it. My marathon was a challenge just for me. I think others should also benefit from my Black Forest Challenge. Why the Duke of Edinburgh Award? Well, as my own little story has already shown, I love a challenge! Having a goal to focus on can bring all kinds of positive change into a person's life, including strengthening their social skills, helping them overcome fears, and improving mental health.

I know how much working on a project has helped me to become a stronger and happier person. I want other young people to have the same opportunity. Whenever I'm whinging and moaning about something petty I think to myself, "Wow, I'm so lucky this is all I have to complain about." Others are less fortunate. They're the ones that could really benefit from the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

So, with that in mind, and with our dear Prince Philip nearing 100, I think it's time I do some good with my personal challenges. I'll be hiking 200 km over the course of seven months to raise money so other young people can challenge themselves too. I'd be so grateful if you could help me help them! Every little bit counts, even if it's just an encouraging word (I'm sure I'll need some of those too).
