Story
Cancer is not going anywhere. There are around 3 million people living with cancer in the UK today, with more than 360,000 being diagnosed every single year. These people are your friends, your colleagues, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, daughters and sons. Whilst treatment is delivered by the NHS, many of those individuals also rely on the support that Macmillan Cancer provide.
I am one of those people. Having been diagnosed twice with cancer in the last 8 years, I will forever be indebted to the medical teams that, against all odds, saved my life. There are so many stories that I could tell you about my patient experience but I'll save those for another time.
All I need to say now is that throughout both of my treatment plans I have been supported in various forms by the work that Macmillan Cancer does for the community. I've been supported emotionally by the Macmillan Nurse specialists, I have had advice from the Macmillan Cancer centers in the hospital where I have been treated and I have used their resources to understand more about my procedures and chemotherapy.
Cancer effects every part of your life, and Macmillan do whatever they can to give people like me the support they need. 98% of income comes from fundraise and that where I need you....
Five years NED from advanced bowel cancer and two years NED from my womb cancer I thought it was time for a new challenge, preferably one that doesn't involve a toxic cocktail. So in July this year, I am lacing up my boots and taking on a Mighty Hike along the beautiful trails of the Peak District to raise money Macmillan. A hike just happens to be a marathon.
I have pledged to raise £250: an amount that could go towards funding a Macmillan Support Worker for two days who could provide emotional, practical or financial advice to someone affected by cancer. I know that times are tight, but I would appreciate any support in helping me to reach this target. Every penny counts!
