In September I'll be travelling to Uganda as a volunteer to help the street children together with a group from #ConnectingHR and #Retrak.
These children live in absolute poverty, open to the dangers of crime, abuse, hunger and neglect.
Retrak has a centre in Kampala where they help these children in many ways; feeding and clothing them, providing counselling, teaching them life skills and, possibly most important of all, playing with them and caring about their little lives. Whenever possible, they work with the families to help them accept their children safely back into the home.
The last Retrak annual report shows that 96 children were rescued from trafficking, 4,265 street and vulnerable children were provided with help in outreach, placement, and follow up, and 605 children were reunited with families. I believe that is a hugely worthwhile impact.
The exact number of street children in Uganda is unknown "because nobody cares". A study by the African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect estimated there were 10,000 children in 2014 – up 70% since 1993. These children need our help.
Please support me with whatever you can !
