Latest Update:

They're back!  Lean, tanned and super-fit, the intrepid cyclists arrived home in triumph, having successfully competed this amazing and gruelling challenge.  Sounds too good to be true?  Not if you know Peter and Will.  They made a great team, supporting each other in every way.

Apparently it is unusual for those undertaking this trip to complete the whole journey by bike.  Not only did they do so, but they did it a day shorter than planned - the weather was so miserable that they couldn’t face a tenth night in a soggy tent, so doubled up their hours in the saddle to reach civilisation and a dry bed!

I believe the prospect of seemingly never-ending mountain ranges to battle over in mud, fog, frost, snow, wind and rain on a daily basis was the most difficult aspect mentally.  That is, if you don’t count the amazing feat of endurance ascending the Kardung-La Pass, the highest road in the world (or could it be called a road when the last 6km were just mud as the already sparse road surface had been washed away by torrential rain?).  To achieve this took nine hours of uphill cycling over a distance of 39k, climbing 2100m to an altitude higher than Everest base camp.  Only Peter and Will managed the whole climb – apparently in the local guides’ experience, never before has anyone managed this, certainly not at the ripe old age of 58!

I am running out of superlatives, so will end this final report by saying a big thank you for all your support and interest in this mammoth undertaking.

The Challenge

We will be cycling 1000 km across the Himalayas from near the Tibetan border at Leh to Manali on the southern side of the Indian Himalayas to raise funds for WheelPower.  The ride includes the Khardung-La Pass, the highest motorable road in the world, taking us up to a staggering height of 18,380 feet (5,603m) over a distance of 39km and higher than Everest Base Camp.

The ride will take us two weeks and our greatest challenge will be the altitude and the terrain.

The Himalayan Challenge is being funded by the team members so your donation will go to WheelPower, and not fund the cost of organising the trip.

WheelPower is the national charity for Wheelchair Sport that helps people with disabilities improve their quality of life.  Often at a time when there are many negative things in a person's life, sport is a real positive.  WheelPower provides world class facilities at the recently redeveloped Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: WheelPower will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor us now!
